Earth Works

I prefer to use my hands rather than brushes and pens. Somehow they just seem to get in the way and block the flow of energy. It was a natural progression for me to pick up the dark orange earth at Belas Knap and use it instead of paint. I have used earth / clay from a nearby spring to make axe shapes and an earth mother. The technique of burnishing has given the sculptures a beautiful shiny surface that changes colour from dark grey to black. These forms have not been fired, they are sun baked.

Tumulus - 2021 - (earth & ink). Reimagining the ploughed out round barrow to the west of Belas Knap.

Earth Mother - 2021 - (clay & earth). This sculpture was made next to the spring at Belas Knap. It represents the body of the earth at this particular place.

Earth Mother & Axes - 2021 - (clay & earth)

Badger Set - 2021 - (earth, ink & charcoal). In the spring badgers change their bedding. This is the straw trail leading to their set in the hawthorn grove, Belas Knap.

Ash Pit - 2021 - (ash & earth). Finding the remains of campfire in the forecourt at Belas Knap. I decided to transform the remaining ash into an earth work.
